The Power Of Natural Sore Throat Remedies
A sore throat can not only be one of the first warning signs of a cold or the flu, it can also be one of the most bothersome! You already know that those first signs, like a sore throat, are the best time to catch it early and start shortening your cold with Cold-EEZE. But we went ahead and rounded up some of the best ingredients nature has to offer, believed to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral and other properties that may help ease a sore throat. Then, we brought them together into 3 delicious recipes, super-food concoctions, really, that are borderline magical: not only for their potential to get rid of a sore throat, but they may also be able to help ease your cold or flu as well. Or at the very least, they’ll be a tasty and soothing addition to your sick day. Keep these ingredients in your pantry and you’ll be ready to create these powerful sore throat remedies the second you feel that tickle coming on.
Turmeric Milk Tonic
Sometimes referred to as “golden milk” or haldi dodh, as it is called in India, this drink has been getting a lot of attention lately for being, basically, a “magic elixir” against all kinds of ailments. Turmeric has actually been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, but now, its many benefits are also being studied scientifically and the curcumin within it has the potential to be quite a wonder nutrient! Essentially, golden milk is milk (dairy, coconut, nut) simmered with turmeric, but of course, a gazzilion recipes have been created that turn the simple drink into a delicious, soothing spiced latte. Adding many of the yummy spices we described here (link), like peppercorn (extremely important, to ensure proper absorption!), cloves, cinnamon, ginger and honey, all of which also happen to have potentially sore throat aiding and immune boosting properties, and you’ll be calling it a magic elixir too. We’ve been inspired by this great recipe, and also this one, which we also love!
1 cup your favorite type of milk
1 tsp of ground turmeric*
1 tsp of ground ginger
1/tsp coconut oil or ghee
1 tsp cardamom
1 tsp cloves
Dash of black pepper
Sweetener to taste (maple syrup, honey, etc.)
Simmer all the ingredients except the sweetener over low heat for 1 minute. Strain with a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a mug. Wait until it’s warm and mix in your sweetener to taste! Enjoy!
Marshmallow and Licorice Root Tea
There are several ways to combine some of these potent ingredients into a multitasking tea. Inspired by a few ideas, like this recipe and this one, we’ve come up with a recipe that brings together these two wonder herbs, plus a few things more, into a deliciously amazing, soothing tea.
4 cups of filtered water
4 tbs of dried, chopped marshmallow root
2-4 dried, broken up licorice roots
1 tbs ground dry or grated fresh ginger
4 tbs chamomile
4 slices of lemon
Simmer everything in a saucepan for about 30 minutes. Strain the herbs. Enjoy a cup, refrigerate the rest!
Honeysuckle Infused Honey
With all the amazing health benefits that honeysuckle is believed to possess, why not infuse it into honey and then keep it on hand, either to take straight, or to sweeten your infusions?
Dried honeysuckle flowers
Mild tasting honey
Mix honeysuckle leaves and honey. Infuse for at least 5 days. Strain the honeysuckle out. Store in a cool, dry place!
