We all know that kids are a mom’s pride and joy – as one ProPhase Labs Mom said, “my loved ones can brighten up the darkest days and let in the sunshine!” – but once Mother’s Day rolls around, kids and dads alike repeatedly wrack their brains to figure out what to give the special women in their lives. This usually ends in a kitschy coffee mug with your face on it, a generic spice rack, or even cleaning supplies so that the “kids can finally help with chores.” Here at Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy, we like to make sure that our Mothers are getting the gifts they deserve – especially after helping us stay healthy all year long!

When asking some of the ProPhase Labs moms what they were hoping to get this Mother’s Day, we heard things like “being able to see all my daughters together and happy” and “to go out to brunch with my girls!” We know that it’s the thought that counts and being with our loved ones is always the perfect gift – but just in case, we put together a list of what we feel are some of the top gifts that Moms would like to receive from their families this holiday… along with breakfast in bed of course!

See more gift ideas on our Pinterest board!

• Traditional Gifts: You can’t go wrong with flowers this holiday but there are a few ways to make this traditional gift a little more special. 1-800-Flowers has their “Mother’s Day 12 Months of Gifts” program which will make Mom feel special and truly surprised for more than just one day. She could receive everything from chocolate covered strawberries to a beautiful bouquet of roses all year long.
• At-Home Spa Day: Moms are always busy and have barely enough time to get their nails done, never mind spend a day at the spa. Let your Mom indulge in a little rest and relaxation this Mother’s Day with the Splish Splash Gift Set from Bath & Body Works. With a variety of scents and products, these gift sets will have Mom running to draw a warm bath – for herself, not for the kids!
• Food for Thought: We think it’s safe to say that most Moms have a love for cooking. Whether it’s homemade soup or a three course meal, it always seems that a meal by Mom can’t be beat. If your Mother is looking to expand her cooking skills, a cooking class – like those at Sur La Table – will make for a fun (and delicious) gift this Mother’s Day!
• For the Bookworm: It’s hard to believe, but Moms like to read books besides the ones that help put her little ones to sleep. If this sounds like your Mother, purchase a few books off of Oprah’s “16 Books Mom Will Love” list. Include a heart-felt note within the cover and you have a gift that’s just right for her!
• Sweet Tooth: Like most women, Moms are bound to enjoy a sugary, chocolaty snack every now and then. If your Mom has a sweet tooth, a gift from Godiva is just what she needs. But, instead of the traditional heart-shaped box-of-chocolate that everyone resorts to, why not try a Chocolate Fondue Gift Set? This yummy and fun set has all of the necessary fondue accessories, including the Godiva Milk and Semi-Sweet Dark Chocolate that we all love and can be used at any time!

If you know of any must-buy Mother’s Day gifts, make sure you share your ideas with the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy community by logging onto the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook Page, helping the Cold-EEZE moms create a “mom-sourced” gift guide http://on.fb.me/Yx5Nxf, or comment right here, on the Get Well Faster Blog.

The month of May marks many exciting events including The Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer. But at Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy, there is one May holiday that seems to shine brighter than the rest: Mother’s Day! After all, Mom is always the one to take care of us when we are sneezing and sniffling, right? To celebrate this special holiday, we decided to dedicate this month’s Fan Spotlight to Kristyn Merkley, one busy Mom who loves Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy almost as much as she loves her three adorable daughters!

Name: Kristyn Merkley

State: AZ

Website / Twitter handle: www.lilluna.com / @LilLunaKristyn

When did you start your website? Over 2.5 years ago!

How long have you wanted to be a mother and designer (we say designer because your new house is gorgeous!)?
I’ve wanted to be a mom since I was a little girl! I am so happy to have 3 adorable kids and one on the way. I’ve always loved decorating my house, and love making it a home.

What is your favorite part about being a busy mother and why?
Being a mom brings me so much happiness. Most days I end up exhausted but I wouldn’t have it any other way if it meant I couldn’t be with my children all day long and having fun creating with them.

What are some of the challenges in keeping your family happy and healthy?
It’s hard to keep little ones happy and healthy when they are all over the place, touching everything in sight, and playing with other children. We just try to make sure we are washing our hands constantly as well as loading up on vitamins!

What is your stay-healthy philosophy?
Our stay-healthy philosophy is to keep the germs away!!

What is most comforting for you when you’re sick?
That I have a good husband that can help take care of me and the kids.

What do you hate most about being sick?
I do not like that I feel like I cannot be a good mom when I’m sick. I also do not like that the sickness often moves from one family member to the next in our family since we’re always together.

How did you discover Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy?
I always knew that zinc was good for you, but my husband’s dad is a doctor and the second we start to feel anything coming on, he’s always recommended Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy. It’s been the “go to” product in our home for many years!

What is your advice to other moms who juggle between career, parenting, home-making and staying healthy?
It’s important to take care of yourself, your family and your health. Make sure your entire family gets the rest they need and load up on a multivitamins to help keep your body’s defenses up.

Log on to the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook page or let us know right here on the Get Well Sooner Blog about your favorite memories with Mom and why they mean so much to you. And don’t forget to cherish your health like you cherish your Mom by taking Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy anytime you start to feel common cold symptoms to shorten your cold.

As some of our fans already know, and for those of you who are new to our site, Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy announced a year and a half ago that we would be donating $1,000 to a well-deserving nominated and voted upon local charity every month through our “Share Your Cause, Not Your Cold” contest, hosted exclusively on Facebook.

The Details: Beginning on September 1st 2011, Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook fans were asked to submit a “Cold-EEZE® Share Your Cause, Not Your Cold” Contest Nomination application, where participants nominated the local charity or “cause” of their choice. Once the nominations for that month were gathered, a panel of judges selected up to five finalists, which were voted on by fans across the nation. The fans had approximately two weeks to vote and a winner was announced at the end of every month.

We received over 200 nominations, raised awareness for about 90 causes and received many thousands of votes from our fans throughout our competition! With so many deserving causes and people working hard every day to improve our world, it was very difficult to pick only 5 finalists each month.

What’d they win? Each month, a new cause won $1,000 from Cold-EEZE® Cold Remedy! In addition, the person who nominated the winning cause received a Flip Camera to film their cause in action to help further awareness.

Who Won? As we nose dive into April, 18 months later, our contest has officially come to an end and we are THRILLED to announce our winners (listed in order from 2011):

With the change in seasons, comes those all too familiar dreaded allergies. The temperatures are getting warmer, the days are longer and we are already seeing buds on the trees – all coming together to make for “The Perfect Allergy Season.”

(Attribution: mcfarlandmo on Flickr Creative Commons

No worries! The Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy team has asked Dr. Jennifer Collins, MD and Assistant Professor and physician specializing in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in the Department of Otolaryngology at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYEEI) since September 2009, to share some healthy, allergy-reducing tips to help curb your allergies this season. With her tips, you can help reduce your misery from allergies and hopefully avoid getting a common cold as well.

Dr. Jennifer Collins’ Allergy-Reducing Tips:

1. Eat Your Super Veggies!

Super veggies, including broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale and bok-choy, are in the family of cruciferous vegetables. Along with being delicious, these vegetables are packed with vitamins, fiber and phytochemicals, naturally occurring compounds in fruits and vegetables that stimulate the production of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are important in the body to help neutralize inflammation and compounds known as free radicals. Sulforaphane, an important phytochemical found in broccoli, stimulates our body’s production of antioxidants in the airways. This may play an important role in helping protect us against diesel fumes, pollution, and tobacco smoke. A 2009 study from the University of California’s School of Medicine published in The Journal of Clinical Immunology found that subjects ingesting 200 grams of broccoli sprouts had a 101% increase in multiple types of antioxidants in their airways. A diet rich in these vegetables may help protect your airways from airborne pollution.

2. Eat More Avocados!

This fruit does more than just make a perfect guacamole; it is also the best fruit source for Vitamin E. Working as an immune booster, Vitamin E is also an antioxidant which helps reduce inflammatory reactions caused by allergies.

3. Get Some Sun!

Low levels of Vitamin D may be related to poorly controlled asthma and increased need for oral corticosteroids. A 2012 study published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine done on 1024 children showed that supplementation with vitamin D may actually improve lung function. How can you make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin D? Get at least an hour of sun every day and have several servings of dairy (milk, yogurt, or cottage cheese) every day. Worried you’re not getting enough? Talk to your doctor to get your levels checked and to see if you need a vitamin.

Despite eating properly, lots of people with allergies need medicine to control symptoms. Seek out a local allergist/immunologist to get a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Not only is suffering through allergies a pain, but another problem you may find yourself tackling during the warmer seasons are spring and summer colds. If you do feel a common cold coming on once the temperatures start to rise, take Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy lozenges, clinically proven to shorten the duration of the common cold by almost half. All Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy products, including our lozenges, oral spray and our new Daytime/Nighttime QuickMelts, release Zinc ions in your mouth that are absorbed by your upper respiratory system. Some scientific studies suggest that the release of zinc ions – as found in Cold-EEZE products’ unique zinc gluconate formula – inhibits the cold virus’ ability to replicate, shortening the duration of the common cold.*

If you know of any helpful allergy-reducing tips, make sure you share this information with the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy community by logging on to the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook Page or comment right here, on the Get Well Sooner Blog.

* Although the precise mechanism by which zinc ions interfere with the cold virus has not been scientifically established, several scientific studies suggest zinc ions inhibit the common cold virus’ ability to replicate.

Since Spring is finally here and Summer is coming up sooner than we think, everyone officially has vacation on their mind. If you find yourself drifting off and daydreaming of tropical sun, or hiking on a mountain top, rest assure that you are definitely not alone!

To help you keep dreaming, or hopefully select a destination for that perfect (and much needed) vacation, the folks at the New York Times took a look at 2013’s top 46 places to visit no matter what kind of trip you wish to take. Some of these locations are expected and already popular vacation spots like Amsterdam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Paris…

Snake River – creative commons by donjd2 pn Flickr

Now, if you are up for a change of pace, the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy team shares what we think are some of the most interesting spots. Take a look and let us know what you think!

• White Salmon River, Washington – If you are feeling adventurous, the White Salmon River is the place to be. The river is known for its whitewater rafting which is a great opportunity to spend quality time with the family or bond with a loved one.

• Adirondacks, New York – Each season in this six-million-acre civilized wilderness offers plenty of opportunities to explore whether you are an outdoor or indoor person. From hiking and golfing to site seeing and the well-known tradition of maple-sugaring, this area can suit any personality!

• Jackson Hole, Wyoming – This year-round vacation destination offers you the serene surroundings of mountains with the added bonus of Yellowstone and Grand Teton. While this may seem to focus on winter sports with three ski resorts, visitors can enjoy a variety of summer sports from rock climbing to mountain biking.

• Charlevoix, Quebec – A Canadian region designated a World Biosphere Reserve, with its music festivals, wildlife helicopter tours and horseback riding – Charlevoix appeals to any personality and provides entertainment for the entire group.

• Washington, DC – As the capital of the U.S., DC offers visitors our nations’ rich history from the very beginning. Whether you are a history buff or not, the capital can be fun for all as it claims to have 197 attractions, 1,021 restaurants and 145 places to stay. Not to mention the blooming of the Cherry Blossom Trees which are celebrated at a three week festival from March to April!

While preparing yourself and your family to go on the dream vacation – or if you’re trying one of the interesting locations we mentioned above, you want to ensure you are all feeling your absolute best. It is important to stay healthy before vacation so you can enjoy every moment of it.

If you do feel common cold symptoms coming on, take Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy. Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy lozenges are clinically proven to shorten the duration of the common cold by almost half. All Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy products release zinc ions in your mouth that are absorbed by your upper respiratory system. Some scientific studies suggest that the release of zinc ions – as found in Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy products’ unique zinc gluconate formula – inhibits the cold virus’ ability to replicate, shortening the duration of the common cold by almost half.

… And just to make sure you enjoy your vacation to the fullest, why not pack some Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Oral Spray in your carry-on? With 45 doses packed into the little bottle, it’s very convenient for travel and shortens the duration of the common cold, just like Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy lozenges.

If you know of any additional hidden vacation spots that other Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy fans would enjoy, make sure you share this information with the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy community by logging on to the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook Page or comment right here, on the Get Well Sooner Blog.

Ahh February…the month of love. Spring is just around the corner, and the common cold season is almost over… Or is it?

Not only has this February been about new beginnings and romance, but the cold and flu season is at its peak, and it seems as though it’s NEVER going away! Some people stick to their family traditions when treating a cold, like tea with honey and lemon (or more quirky remedies!), while others may stand in the pharmacy aisle for an hour trying to decipher which cold remedy actually works the best. There are a lot of cold remedies out there that claim they have been “clinically proven” and that “studies have shown,” but how do you know which claims are true and which is the best for you?

One of the things that makes Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy different from most brands is that we have published, peer-reviewed, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical studies that prove that our zinc gluconate remedy works to actually shorten the duration of your cold by almost half (instead of just relieving symptoms).
It’s important that clinical studies be published and peer-reviewed because that means that the industry accepts the methodology and results of the study as legitimate.
If these studies are available, they should be easily accessible on the brand’s website. You easily can see and download our studies here, on the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy website. Both the Dartmouth College study and the Cleveland Clinic study (which used the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Lozenges) proved that Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy lozenges work to reduce the duration of the common cold by almost half.
You can find out more about how valid clinical studies are conducted with this infographic, which uses the Dartmouth study to illustrate the methodology.

If you know what to look for when confirming a brand’s claims, make sure you share this information with your friends, so that they can make informed decisions too! Log on to the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook Page or comment right here, on the Get Well Sooner Blog, to connect with the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy community, and let us know how you help your friends shorten their colds; apart from sharing your Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy!

Here at Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy, when we discuss kissing, we’re usually referring to the contagious effects it has in passing along germs (yuck). However with Valentine’s Day quickly approaching and with the effectiveness of Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy for combating the common cold, we figured it was safe to shift our thought process (for now) to the many joys of kissing instead!

After all, studies have shown that kissing does have some health benefits including boosting immune systems; a revved-up metabolism (your heart’s usually racing); and of course, overall improved mood and a decrease in stress levels.

This Valentine’s Day, we wanted to give you all a big, virtual kiss by passing along a list of our Top 5 Favorite Movie Kisses. Check them out below, maybe they’ll infect you with the urge to kiss someone!

1) My Girl – Ah puppy love. Anyone who takes the time to practice their kissing techniques on their own hand before planting the real deal on us is a keeper in our books.

2) Sixteen Candles – Even the worst of birthdays can be forgotten when the day ends with a kiss from your dream man over a birthday cake. We know we wouldn’t mind having that kind of birthday…

3) Clueless – There’s nothing quite like sitting at the top of the sweeping staircase in your family’s Beverly Hills mansion while kissing your ex-stepbrother…wait, what? While it sounds puzzling, the realization of affectionate feelings between Cher and Josh results in a kiss that leaves us craving for a sequel.

4) The Notebook – How could we possibly create a list of kisses without mentioning The Notebook? Never seen it? Well we can sum it up nicely with: Ryan Gosling, rain, and one now very-recognizable movie moment.

5) Gone With the Wind – Resistance doesn’t dissuade Rhett Butler in the least as he takes a defiant Scarlett O’Hara against a dulled orange background and plants a big one on her. One that she clearly doesn’t forget…and even after all these years, neither have we.

Tell us about some of your favorite movie makeouts by visiting the Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy Facebook Page or right here on the Get Well Sooner Blog and have a wonderful (and germ-free) Valentine’s Day!

If you find yourself continuously experiencing signs of a cold in the winter, you might not have to look any further than your work space. A number of things can lead to an unhealthy work place but experts agree that long hours, high stress and negative work environments contribute to unhealthy jobs.

The folks at Monster.com took a look at some healthy professions and extracted the healthiest qualities of each. Some of these professions, according to the article, include activity specialists, chiropractors, choreographers, florists, massage therapists, nutritionists, personal trainers, professors, running coaches and yoga instructors. We therefore recommend taking healthy aspects of those careers and trying to find ways that you can incorporate such relevant practices into your work place.

The Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy team shares some of these healthy work qualities, as well as tips on how you can incorporate them into your everyday work regimen, no matter where you work! With these tips you can start to make your current workplace a healthier, more positive environment that could reduce the likelihood of the common cold and other illnesses and benefit your overall quality of life.

Think about what you’re eating. It is time to get rid of the idea that you simply “don’t have the time” to take care of yourself or worry about your diet. Take the Personal Trainers for example. Even though they spend their days exercising, they take time to think about what they are putting in their bodies to be in the best shape possible. Read nutrition labels and really see what you are putting in your body. Make it easier by bringing your lunch, stocking your drawers with healthy snacks and getting rid of anything that may tempt you.

Surround yourself with beauty. Florists are surrounded by beauty all day long and allow themselves to be inspired by the nature around them. Just because you are not a florist or a landscaper, does not mean you can’t be inspired by nature as well. Allow yourself to be inspired by your workplace surroundings and replace those drab gray walls with images of things you find beautiful or relaxing. Keep your workspace uncluttered and get some simple, pretty flowers each week in a small vase on your desk. It may also help to add some family photos or items you love to make you feel more at home, comfortable and less stressed.

Craft a healthy lifestyle outside of the office. Chiropractors and Nutritionists focus on long-term overall well-being and living a healthy lifestyle versus a short-term New Year resolution that often lasts only a mere two weeks after the holiday. Make a commitment to yourself and stick to it. By creating a healthy lifestyle outside of the office, it becomes easier to transfer these healthy habits into your daily work routine as well.

Work as a team. Choreographers are always working with a team. If one person succeeds, you all succeed and it makes achieving your goals that much more rewarding. At work, try to create more group projects so you can depend on each other and not take the entire load of stress by yourself. Team projects can also help build office morale and create a more productive work environment.

Happy 2013 to all of the members of the Cold-EEZE Community! We hope that it’s off to a healthy start!

While many of us spent New Year’s Day trying to catch up on sleep and staying warm, Cold-EEZE and MTV’s Jersey Shore cast member Vinny Guadagnino teamed up in sub-freezing temperatures for the second year in a row in Coney Island, New York to take an annual dip at the 2013 Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge.

Although Coney Island was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the energy was sky-high on January 1st as Vinny, wearing a Cold-EEZE bathing suit and cap, and hundreds of other hardy plungers, clad only in bathing suits (and a few interesting costumes including a mermaid!) took their places along the beach. Hundreds of additional onlookers huddled together in the 30-degree temperatures, shaking their heads in disbelief to join in on the countdown before all the participants sprinted towards the chilly waters of the Atlantic to take their first swim of 2013.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge is a tradition that dates back to 1903 and was originally believed to serve as a boost to one’s stamina, virility and immunity. No stranger to the need for stamina after six seasons of the Jersey Shore, Guadagino cites the event as a seasonal favorite.

“This is like my new tradition,” Guadagnino said. “It’s a great highlight of the year, and a way to kick off the New Year.”

Vinny also went on his Twitter account (@VINNYGUADAGNINO) to Tweet to his 3+ million followers about the event saying:

In addition to promoting positive health practices, Guadagnino and Cold-EEZE were on hand to raise money to support Camp Sunshine, a retreat in Maine for kids with life threatening illnesses and their families as well as the efforts to rebuild Coney Island following some of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Throughout the festive event, onlookers and participants alike were handed samples of Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy products ranging from our clinically proven zinc lozenges to our new Daytime/Nighttime QuickMelts to help reinforce the message of health and wellness for the New Year.
