Do you have a Cold or the Flu?
Many people confuse the two by calling a bad cold “the flu,” or vice versa, but they are actually quite different. Colds are minor infections of the nose and throat caused by hundreds of different viruses. The flu is an infection of the respiratory system caused by the influenza virus.
Common Cold Symptoms vs. Flu Symptoms
What do you know about the common cold?
The greatest myth about the common cold is that to be susceptible to colds you must have a weakened immune system. The fact is, healthy people with normal immune systems are highly susceptible to cold virus infection once the virus enters the nose.

There are about 200 different kinds of these viruses; the most frequent of which is the rhinovirus—“rhino” from the Greek for nose, where the cold virus commonly enters the body. Once these viruses gain access, mucus and hair-like cilia carry them to your throat, where they invade an innocent cell and force it to start churning out viral copies. This page is designed to offer you some defensive strategies to stop cold viruses in their tracks.
