The News about Zinc and Colds is Good, but Choose Your Remedy Carefully

A comprehensive review of decades of medical research on zinc and colds has confirmed that zinc gluconate can reduce the duration of the common cold. Analyzing 15 separate studies of zinc and colds, the prestigious Cochrane Collaboration concluded that zinc gluconate cold remedies can shorten colds.

At the same time, variation in results across different studies of zinc and colds suggests that the specific zinc formula used in a common cold remedy has a significant impact on effectiveness. So the next time you’re deciding how to treat a cold, choose your zinc remedy carefully.

The Relationship Between Zinc and Colds

What’s the biological relationship between zinc and colds? Scientific theory suggests that the cold virus causes infection by attaching to receptors in the upper respiratory system and reproducing. Zinc ions, it’s believed, compete for these same receptors and thereby prevent the cold virus from replicating. In a sense, zinc and colds are natural adversaries. When choosing a zinc-basedremedy for a cold, the key question is how well it releases zinc ions into the patient’s upper respiratory system.* A recent continuing education activity in Pharmacy Times noted that “many zinc products are fraught with an underlying problem: the lack of zinc ion availability” due to the use of additives that block zinc ion release.

Cold-EEZE Cold Remedy

Cold-EEZE is a homeopathic cold remedy made with zinc gluconate. What is zinc gluconate? It’s a natural compound that, when taken in the right oral medicine, effectively releases zinc ions, which are absorbed by the upper respiratory system. Unlike some other zinc-based remedies, Cold-EEZE does not have additives that can block the release of zinc ions.*

The effectiveness of Cold-EEZE lozenges as a treatment for a cold has been demonstrated in clinical studies. In double-blind, placebo-controlled studies at Dartmouth College and the Cleveland Clinic, patients taking the zinc gluconate formula used in Cold-EEZE recovered from their colds an average of three to four days faster than patients in the placebo groups. The Cold-EEZE zinc gluconate formula shortened the duration of patients’ colds by almost half.*

If you’re seeking common cold relief, the news on zinc and colds is good. But choose your zinc cold remedy carefully: choose Cold-EEZE.
