It’s that time of year. You know the one we’re talking about. The one when every time you turn around someone is coughing, sneezing, or complaining of a sore throat. Or all of the above. Sometimes it feels like you can’t get away from all the germs. We know. But it doesn’t have to be all bad! Enter Honey. That historic, iconic sore throat remedy that has been used for thousands of years in everything from Ancient Egyptian embalming fluid and wound protection to modern coughs. But honey is not just an old wives tale. Honey, especially raw, unfiltered honey, has been shown to contain plenty of antioxidants and help reduce coughs. Some have called it the ultimate home remedy for sore throats. So if you have the misfortune of starting to feel that throat tickle, there are several pleasant (and a couple not as pleasant) ways to soothe the pain using the myriad healing powers of honey and help you remedy your approaching sore throat and be done with it before you know it. So make like Winnie the Pooh and get that honey, honey, honey in your tummy!

Sore Throat Remedies

GingerTea
  1. Ginger tea

One of our classics, we love simply steeping some ginger root in hot water, adding a splash of lemon juice and sweetening with honey to taste. This tea combines all the health benefits of ginger, lemon and honey into a delicious, easy to make and to drink, soothing home remedy for sore throat, and for the common cold in general.

Turmeric Milk
  1. Turmeric Milk

We’ve touted the alleged benefits of this drink, based on a traditional Indian drink, before. Besides packing the health benefits of turmeric, the honey will add not only sweet deliciousness, but it’s own sore throat benefits.

To enjoy this delicious sore throat remedy, simply simmer 1 cup of milk with a teaspoon of turmeric and a few peppercorns to make sure that the curcumin in the turmeric is properly absorbed. Sweeten with honey to taste. You can also add ginger and cardamom, if you like, for even more sore throat soothing power!

Chamomile Tea
  1. Chamomile tea

A classic for a reason. Chamomile has been used for centuries as a soothing drink, especially helpful for colds and sore throat as it is said to have muscle relaxing and actual pain killing properties! Mix in a little raw Manuka honey and you have an easy and excellent sore throat remedy.

Apple Cider Vinegar
  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Now we begin to enter the less “pleasant” territory. However, many swear by this mix of 1 tbs of ACV with 1 tbs of honey in a cup of very warm water, claiming that the high acidity of the vinegar helps, while the honey promotes soothing and healing.

Cayenne
  1. Cayenne

Ready to really kick it up a notch? Try Cayenne. Seriously. It’s believed that the capsaicin in hot peppers can temporarily relieve pain, so mix up ⅛ to ½ tsp of Cayenne pepper (depending on your heat tolerance!) into a cup of boiling water and sweeten it as much as you want with your favorite honey do-it-all and sip throughout the day, if you can take it!
