Traveling? 8 Tips for Staying Healthy on the Go

Did you know you’re as much as 20% more likely to catch a cold after traveling by plane? That’s for the simple reason that you’ve just been cooped up in a small space with dozens of other people and their germs. But you can reduce the duration of your cold, make yourself more comfortable in the event you do get sick, and even reduce your likelihood of coming down with something by putting a few extra items on your packing checklist.

Below is what you should make sure to bring on your travels – for the flight and after – so you don’t have to scramble to find what you need.

Protein bars, granola or other healthy snacks. Since airplane food is often as unhealthy as it is flavorless, it’s a good idea to bring something nourishing to munch on, especially for longer cross-country flights. Don’t starve yourself just because you don’t want to shell out for some dehydrated sandwiches and overly salty snacks.

Hand sanitizer. Make sure to pack it in your carry-on bag. You’ll be glad you did when you have to use the plane’s bathroom. For good measure, avoid touching your face with your hands as much as you can when you’re still in the air.

Refillable water bottle. We all know it’s important to stay hydrated on planes, but it’s just as essential once you’ve landed. Don’t just quench your thirst when you stop into a café or restaurant – keep a water bottle on you at all times to sip on throughout the day.

Tissues. If you do get sick, it’s best to not have to rely on your relatives or the hotel you’re staying in to have what you need to be comfortable.

Antibacterial wipes. If you’re staying in a hotel, it never hurts to make sure the entire place is disinfected to prevent the spread of germs. These are also great on airplanes. You can wipe down everything from your tray table to your arm rests for good measure.
